War Stories

by Joe Haldeman

Hugo and Nebula Award winner Joe Haldeman is one of the most compelling writers to emerge from the Vietnam War. War Stories collects together two novels, several short stories, and two long poems that deal explicitly with Haldeman’s Vietnam and post-Vietnam experiences. The novel War Year was one of the first books written by Haldeman upon his return from Vietnam, and the novel 1968 (which chronicles time in country, as well as a soldiers return “home”) was not published until 1994. These two novels form compelling bookends to a career’s worth of writing that has been passionately engaged with the questions raised by the Vietnam War. War Stories includes the Forever War novella, “A Separate War,” as well as three new author introductions which give some historical, personal, and bibliographic background to the fiction herein. The novels and stories in this book have never been as potent, nor as terribly relevant as they are today.

Worlds

by Joe W. Haldeman

In the near future, an idealistic young student visiting Earth from an orbiting colony becomes ensnared in radical politics and a dark conspiracy of violent destruction. By the close of the twenty-first century, almost half a million souls have already abandoned Earth to live in satellites orbiting the strife-ridden planet. Each of these forty-one Worlds is an independent entity boasting its own government and culture, yet each remains bound to the troubled home World by economic pressure. A brilliant student of political science born and raised in New New York, the largest of the orbiting Worlds, young Marianne O'Hara has never been to the surface but now has a golden opportunity to continue her studies far below her floating home of steel. Life on Earth, however, is very different from anything she has ever experienced. With power in the hands of a privileged few and unrest running rampant, the allure of radical politics might be too much for an idealistic and inexperienced young World dweller to resist. But even the best of intentions can have disastrous consequences, and Marianne soon finds herself unwittingly drawn into a wide-ranging conspiracy that could result in the total destruction of everything on Earth ... and above.

The Hemingway Hoax

by Joe W. Haldeman

Devotees of SF and literary mystery will enjoy this fast-paced, well-thought-out adventure that takes a college professor / Hemingway scholar on an eerie journey to coexisting universes. The characters reenact their lives in each slightly different, slightly worse universe. In a Key West bar, Baird is conned into writing a story in Hemingway's 1920s style, which could be passed off as one of the contents of the famous valise left on a train by Hemingway's then-wife Hadley. Returning to Key West from the Hemingway Collection at the Kennedy Library, Baird suddenly finds Ernest Hemingway sitting opposite him in the train compartment. This is, however, a nonhuman who can take on any form, and who has come to warn Baird not to finish the Hemingway pastiche. In a lively, philosophical conversation, the temporal policeman explains that if Baird continues in his plan he will be killed. As each attempt to murder him fails, Baird finds himself in a slightly altered universe--and in one of these supernatural worlds, Baird evolves into Hemingway himself.
